The 2023/24 season could be a telling one for South African goalkeeper Jethren Barr and his future, with indications that the shot-stopper is currently assessing his options.
The shot-stopper announced his exit from Portadown this week, following their relegation from the Danske Bank Premiership.
Barr signed a new and improved three-year deal with the Northern Ireland top-flight side in June last year. However, the club's form took a turn for the worst since then.
His contract extension came on the back of an inspired season where he was crowned his side's Player of the Season in the 2021/22 campaign. Barr, as a result, attracted interest from Larne, who ply their trade in the Northern Ireland topflight, although nothing came of it at the time.
The Siya crew now understands that the 27-year-old, who has made 30 appearances in all competitions this season, is contemplating his options with regards to where he will play his football in the new campaign.
The former Maritzburg United goalkeeper is understood to have a number of suitors monitoring his situation both in the PSL and abroad, with this publication being informed that he is currently weighing up his options.
Barr came through the Bidvest Wits academy, where he was promoted to the first team in 2012, before stints with Stellenbosch FC and Maritzburg United. He was also a regular in the national U17, U20 and U23 teams, although he is yet to feature for Bafana Bafana.
