Why Lekay Will Succeed In Europe

Why Lekay Will Succeed In Europe

Gary Cassisa, who represents striker Wayde Lekay, is confident that the target man can succeed in Europe following his move to Swedish third division club, FC Trollhattan.

The 26-year-old recently spent time with Stuart Baxter's Helsinborg's FC, but the Siya crew understands that a move did not materlialise for the lanky striker due to work permit issues.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - SEPTEMBER 10: Wayde Leka

It was the second move that did not happen for the forward, after he spent some time training with Kaizer Chiefs last season, although Amakhosi opted against roping in the Cape-born star as a free agent at the time.

He did conclude a move to Cape Town City shortly after, but he parted ways with the Citizens having scored one goal and laid off one assist in 14 matches in all competitions.

Now, Lekay will be getting his career back on track in Europe, where his direct style could benefit his side as they look to gain promotion to the second tier which is known as the Supperetten League.

Speaking to the Siya crew, Cassisa has revealed why he is confident the striker will be able to forge a career for himself abroad.

"We weren't pushing hard for anything locally, although he was training at [Cape Town] Spurs, because he worked with Shaun [Bartlett] at TS Galaxy and that was the time when he scored those three bangers and was nominated for DStv Premiership Goal of the Month. With Shaun being an ex striker, we thought it would be good for him to go there.

"Wayde always wanted to try his luck in Europe and an opportunity came up there. Stuart Baxter was looking for a striker and at that time, they wanted Cole [Alexander] and Wayde but Wayde's work permit was just gonna take too long so they got a local Swedish boy to save time - but that door is not closed."

As to how Lekay ended up at his current club, Cassisa explains how the move to FC Trollhattan happened.

"After leaving Helsinborgs, he went to Oddevold, the current log leaders for two days and did extremely well. But the problem was they couldnt sign him because they had too many strikers. Luckily the coach knew the coach at FC Trollhattan and they were looking to win promotion to the Superratan," he said.

Cassisa is confident that Lekay will succeed in Europe thanks to the style of play deployed by those teams and his physical make-up.

"Wayde is built for Europe, and he is going to score goals there. He's good in the air and has been banging in goals over there. His game is suited for there because they play to the striker, whereas here, we don't unless you're playing for a team like [Mamelodi Sundowns] with that type of midfield.
