After Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze won the Betway Premiership Player of the Month award, Soccer Laduma analyses his chances for Goalkeeper of the Season accolade.
With Dikwena still in the bottom half of the table, there is debate going on, whether Chipezeze can upset the odds and go all the way to win the Goalkeeper of the Season award, against the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Ronwen Williams and Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates, with both clubs competing for the league title.
To analyze the situation, in hindsight of at least the past ten years, there has been instances where a goalkeeper of a team not fighting for the title has won the Goalkeeper of the Season accolade.
Williams himself won the award twice in a row in the colours of SuperSport United, who were not fighting for the title in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns.
The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper won the coveted shot-stopper award playing for SuperSport, who finished 6th and 5th respectively, ahead of Denis Onyango, who won the title with Masandawana in the 2019/20 campaign and also upset Onyango again, including former Pirates shot-stopper Richard Ofori, after the Buccaneers came a close second in the 2018/19 term.
Other goalkeepers who won the award, who were not favourites, in the last decade, includes Moeneeb Josephs, who was playing for Bidvest Wits in the 2014/15 campaign, where Wits finished third.
Darren Keet also won the award in the 2016/17 term but his team Wits had won the league title.

The recent unlikely winner of the award is former Cape Town City shot-stopper Hugo Marques, who was named the best goalkeeper in the 2021/22 season after City finished second.
Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune also won the award in the 2017/18 season, even though Chiefs finished third.
Magesi are currently placed 11th and still have chances of finishing in the top eight.
Chipezeze currently has the most number of clean-sheets in the Betway Premiership with 11, from 22 games.
