With clubs expected to make final decisions on their 2023/24 season squads, Orlando Pirates have been offered advice about the players.
Earlier today (Thursday), Kaizer Chiefs coach Molefi Ntseki confirmed the club's interest in Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sibongiseni 'Ox' Mthethwa, who has been one of the top performers under coach Steve Barker and a sought-after player from several clubs in the league.
Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have also been linked with the Bafana Bafana player, although it seems that the club from the Winelands is reluctant to part ways with him.
With the Buccaneers having some of their signings that were made during the off-season performing well whenever given a chance to play, including Patrick Maswanganyi and Katlego Otladisa, former striker James Mothibi has advised the Soweto giants to work with the players already in coach Jose Riveiro's squad without making any more additions during this transfer window.
The PSL's transfer window is set to close on September 22.
The Good
"With Pirates being linked with some players, my answer is that a decision like that would have to be be made by the coach on whether to bring more players or not. All that we can do as people following the club would be to welcome the players when they join the team. If the coach feels that any player that he brings to the club can fit into his system, then that player will be welcomed by those associated with the club and supported," said Mothibi.
The Bad
"But sometimes we should not link players to the club when we are not sure if there have been any official talks with their respective clubs. Sometimes, we as the legends and media need to respect players that are under contract at their clubs. Even with Pirates, they shouldn't find themselves being linked with all the players when there is nothing official that is happening," he said.
The Ugly
"To be honest, I don't even feel that Pirates need to add more players. They need to work with what they have. They can then decide for the second round of the season which players they can bring on board if there is a need to do so. I think it's too early to be thinking about more players to be added to the squad. The team has just come from a successful pre-season and I think they need to respect those players that were in pre-season in Spain," concluded the Warrengton-born man, who is now a coach.
Have Pirates assembled the best possible squad in the league?
