Stellies Through NBK Cup Semis After Thrashing SuperSport

Stellies Through NBK Cup Semis After Thrashing SuperSport

Stellenbosch cruised to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup after hammering SuperSport United 4-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday afternoon.

Result: Stellenbosch 0-4 SuperSport United

Date: 13 April 2024

Venue: Danie Craven Stadium

SuperSport made three changes from their narrow defeat against TS Galaxy, as they were boosted by the return of Bradley Grobler, Lyle Lakay and Abdulrazack Hamza.

Stellies, similarly, made three alterations following their goalless draw against Sekhukhune United, as goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke, Jayden Adams and Athenkosi Mcaba were brought in.

Steve Barker's charges had a dream start after Anicet Oura opened the scoring within the first seven minutes with a strike from a rebound in the box.

Matsatsantsa looked to respond and on 19 minutes, Terrence Dzvukamanja had a chance in the box with a low strike that was saved in the bottom corner by Masuluke.

As the game opened up, Thulani Hlatshwayo almost levelled matters for Gavin Hunt's men eight minutes before the interval with a header in the box that missed narrowly wide.

The home side still carried a threat on transitions as on the stroke of half-time Andre de Jong almost doubled their lead with a strike that was saved in the bottom corner by shot-stopper Ricardo Goss.

Stellies could not start the second stanza any better after Devon Titus doubled their lead within a minute from the break with a strike in the box after a through ball by Iqraam Rayners.

As United sent numbers forward, they were caught on a counter-attack six minutes later after De Jong put the result beyond Matsatsantsa after he was teed up by Adams from another counter-attack.

After being denied by the crossbar moments after De Jong made it 3-0, Rayners finally made it 4-0 on the hour-mark with a stunning shot from a difficult angle.

With 23 minutes to go, SuperSport made an attacking change as Etiosa Ighodaro replaced Grobler for fresh legs.

However, Stellies had their tails up and the writing was on the wall for United, as the Cape Winelands side cruised to the semi-finals.
