The Soweto Derby defeat is not the only thing Orlando Pirates has to worry about, with a cup final record showing that they rarely get the job done when it matters most in knockout competitions.
The Buccaneers have taken part in 11 knockout competition finals since 2013 and have only been on the winning side on two occasions, winning the 2014 Nedbank Cup and the 2020 MTN8.

The Soweto giants beat Bidvest Wits in 2014, coming from behind to seal the tie 3-1, thanks to a brace by Kermit Erasmus and another from Sifiso Myeni. In 2020, the side came from behind again when they faced Bloemfontein Celtic's Deon Hotto and Thembinkosi Lorch inspired the comeback.
Pirates, however, have been on the losing side on nine occasions in the finals they have taken part in since 2013. The last one they were involved in was the CAF Confederation Cup. They were also beaten in the 2013 Champions League and 2015 Confederation Cup finals, by Al Ahly and Etoile du Sahel respectively.
Pirates also suffered defeat in the 2013 and 2014 MTN8 final against Platinum Stars and Kaizer Chiefs, and were beaten back-to-back by SuperSport United in the 2016 and 2017 Nedbank Cup finals.
