GladAfrica Championship Wrap: 21-22 August

GladAfrica Championship Wrap: 21-22 August

Saturday, 21 August
Black Leopards 1-1 Polokwane City

Black Leopards returned to the GladAfrica Championship on the back of a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City in the Limpopo derby on the opening day on Saturday.

That said the match promised much fire workers, but it didn't quite turn out that way as both goals arrived during the first half with Tilkas Tuthlwa netting for the home side while Puleng Tlolane was on target for Rise and Shine.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 3-1 Cape Town All Stars

The resurrected Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila started life back in the second tier with a 3-1 victory over Cape Town All Stars.

Tshakhuma, who acquired Royal AM's status, will look to make another push to the big-time and their first encounter in the Championship certainly sends a message to the potential promotion chasers.

Tebogo Reed, Lebogang Mlangeni and Tebogo Motloung secured the comeback win for TTM after they fell behind to Neo Mphuthi's first-half strike.

JDR Stars 1-0 University of Pretoria

Following last season's sixth-place finish, JDR Stars were back in action and recorded a 1-0 win over the University of Pretoria in their first home clash of the season.

The match seemed to head for a goalless draw, but Sipho Zwane came good for Stars with the winner in the last two minutes of the tie.

Hungry Lions 0-0 Uthongathi FC

The newly-promoted Hungry Lions started their maiden campaign in the Championship with a hard-fought goalless draw against Uthongathi FC.

Lions entered the Championship on the back of their victory in the final of the ABC Motsepe League play-offs at the end of last season, but they now begin their new journey with a point.

TS Sporting 1-0 Pretoria Callies

Pretoria Callies began their campaign on the back-foot following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of TS Sporting at the Kabokweni Stadium in the Mpumalanga Province.

It took a solitary strike from Mohau Mokate in the second half to secure the spoils for the home side.

Sunday, 22 August
Jomo Cosmos 0-1 Richards Bay FC

After missing out on promotion to the DStv Premiership, Richards Bay FC started their campaign with a late 1-0 win over Jomo Cosmos.

Ezenkosi succumbed to the defeat through a penalty-kick in the last two minutes by Sakhile Hlongwa.

Free State Stars 0-1 Platinum City Rovers

Free State Stars made a losing start to their season following a 1-0 loss to the new boys Platinum City Rovers.

Like Hungry Lions, Rovers entered the league after qualifying for the final of the ABC Motsepe League play-offs and Lehlohonolo Mojela's solitary strike steered the side to victory over Ea Lla Koto.

Cape Town Spurs 0-0 Venda Football Academy

Cape Town Spurs played to a disappointing goalless draw against the revamped Venda Football Academy.

After narrowly escaping relegation last season, Dylan Deane's men were eager start to start on a high but Venda did well frustrate their counterparts at Athlone Stadium.
