Much debate has surrounded Mokoena's win at Sunday's PSL awards; however, it was the DStv Premiership coaches who had the final say.
The 25-year-old midfielder enjoyed an incredible season for the irrepressible Brazilians and has now weighed in on his achievements, attributing it to doing the 'dirty' work for the team, while heaping praise on the club's head coach, Rulani Mokwena.
"I will always do the dirty work for the team, score, and assist when needed, but I know there are players that will do that. My job is to protect the team and defend because I know that the players in front of me will score. My target for this season was to play regularly and perform well", he told the club's official website.
"Coach Rulani has reminded me throughout the season that my job is to protect the defence so that we concede fewer goals as a team. I did a lot of work with the coach. I started being interested in Rodri Hernandez and watching Manchester City as well as how he moves and defends", he continued.
Mokoena has been called up to coach Hugo Broos' 34-member preliminary squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Morocco on 17 June.
