In what may come as a surprise to some, Mamelodi Sundowns have recalled one of their players who hasn't kicked a ball for the club in over two years.
There was a wide train of thought that Erwin Saavedra's time as a Sundowns player could be over.
Although the Bolivian does have a contract with the Brazilians until next season, his big-money move in 2022 did not work out for the club and he has arguably failed to yield a return on their R12 million investment.
After just eight games for Sundowns in two years, the midfielder was sent out on loan to his former club Bolivar for six months, in a move aimed at regaining his confidence.
But in a shock twist Sundowns have recalled the player to their squad, something that was confirmed by his parent club over the weekend.
"Bolivar club informs that Erwin Saavedra's six-month loan has come to an end. South African club Mamelodi Sundowns have requested his reinstatement for the season. We wish Erwin every success in this new stage of his career. We appreciate his commitment and dedication during his time with us and we trust that he will continue to excel in his professional career," the statement read.
