Apart from the staggering R56 million they are guaranteed of by virtue of making the finals, Sundowns have had a few more reasons to smile one of them being their trail of revenge.
Sundowns were drawn against Petro De Luanda in the quarter-finals of the innovative tournament. Downs fans will be quick to remember that it was the very same opponent that eliminated them from the 2020/21 CAF Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
The Brazilians managed to get their revenge with a 2-0 aggregate win over their Angolan foes.
Similarly in the semi-finals, Sundowns were faced with a familiar opponent in Al Ahly, a side that eliminated them from the 2021/22 CAF Champions League. Again, Sundowns managed to get their revenge against the Red Devils with a 1-0 aggregate win to advance to the final.
"We are very close to glory, [there are] two more games. You will decide to write another story, only you. In the last three seasons of the [CAF] Champions League, we got knocked out by Petro, we then got knocked out by Al Ahly, and then we got knocked out by Wydad," he told the players as per the club's official social media accounts.
"So, who is coming next?
"Who did we finish? Al Ahly… and before that? Petro, so you have to finish it – it's written in the stars," he continued.
Sundowns take on Wydad Casablanca in the African Football League final, with the first leg getting under way on Sunday 5 November, before the return leg in Pretoria on Saturday 11 November.
