Mendieta was tipped with a high-profile move to Gauteng with all of the 'Big three' in Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns understood to have been keen on his services.
However, it was the Brazilians who ultimately won the race for the Argentine ace.
Now, following his move to Chloorkop, Mendieta has revealed that it is the fierce competition within the squad and their insatiable appetite that attracted him to the club.
"The truth is that I am a very competitive person, and I really like the competition and the desire to compete and win trophies. I think that this is the opportunity that I was looking for. That's what attracted me to this team," he told Sundowns' media department.
"Personally, I want to win a trophy with Sundowns and I want to continue doing what I was doing with Stellenbosch and to get the best out of me at Sundowns.
"I know I can do it and it will help me grow as a professional"
Mendieta joins a host of South American players on the books of Sundowns in Gaston Sirino, Marcelo Allende and fellow newcomer Lucas Ribeiro Costa.
