Goalkeeping Conundrum For Sundowns With Loans & Contracts

Goalkeeping Conundrum For Sundowns With Loans & Contracts

As the season heads towards the end, Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to be open to handing a new contract to one of their players, though nothing has been finalized as yet.

Reyaad Pieterse is in the final few months of his contract with the Premiership champions, after the club exercised the option in his contract at the end of last season. This means Sundowns would have to offer the former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United goalkeeper a new contract. The Siya crew understands that a final decision will be made in the coming weeks, but there is a good chance that he will still be at Sundowns beyond the expiration of his contract in June.

With Ricardo Goss out on loan for two seasons at SuperSport and veteran Kennedy Mweene preparing for the next step in his career, which is goalkeeper coaching, Sundowns look set to offer Pieterse a new deal for him to stay at Chloorkop to provide back up to Ronwen Williams, who is likely to be the number one shot-stopper at the club for some years to come.

Sundowns have Jody February out on loan to AmaZulu for the rest of the season, but the Siya crew understands that there is feeling that he might not be ready yet to challenge Williams for the number one spot. Indications are that February has a future at Chloorkop, and sources have revealed that the shot-stopper is seen as a player who the club can call upon whenever the more senior players are not available.

At 26, February still has some time on his side to claim the number one jersey in future at Sundowns, due to the fact that goalkeepers tend to mature later in their careers.

Denis Onyango remains a key figure at Sundowns and could, in fact, be given a role once he calls time on his playing career, but Sundowns look set to focus on their younger goalkeepers to ensure their careers are secured in terms of contracts.
