Will Khama Billiat Stay At Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs have already started releasing players whose contracts are coming to an end next month starting with long-serving defender Eric "Tower" Mathoho.

The other player whose contract is coming to an end is Zimbabwean born forward Khama Billiat.

As reported by Soccer Laduma earlier this month, Billiat could stay at the club for another season though nothing has been finalised yet. The condition, according to Siya sources, is that Billiat may be asked to take a salary cut to stay at Naturena.

The latest coming out of Naturena is that the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder could know his fate this week. Different Siya crew sources privy to the situation have said that three parties, the technical team, the management and the board are expected to meet this week to potentially decide the future of the former PSL Footballer of the Year.

The sources revealed to the Siya crew that there are a few issues the club needs to iron out concerning the 32-year-old's new contract.

"There is a lot that they need to discuss about Khama. There are divided opinions and suggestions about his role at the club going forward," said the Siya source.

"The club really wants to keep him but they are also looking at the injuries he has suffered and then his salary. But they are meeting this week to finalise and then decide what the future holds for him," the source concluded.

In addition, another source stated that the main issue the club may need to solve is his salary.

"You know, if they can agree on cutting down the salary then it's 90% that he will stay. That's the main bone of contention. The club feels that with the possibility of playing very few games due to his age and injuries they can not be paying him the same salary as when he joined the team from Sundowns.

"If he agrees to take a salary cut then it will be easy to make the final decision of him staying on for yet another season. However it's a tricky situation because there are reports that other teams including Young Africans of Tanzania are interested in him. But all in all, he will know his fate before the end of this week," the Siya source said.

Kaizer Chiefs have not responded to these comments at the time of publishing the article.
