The Kaizer Chiefs changes in the club's chain of authority when it comes to its recruitment policy should have been a warning signal to Walter Steenbok.
As head of scout, with two Masters degrees, it was clear there was no role for him when Amakhosi appointed Molefi Ntseki as head of technical and scouting and then followed that up by naming Kaizer Motaung Jnr as the Sporting Director.
Indications are that the crucial role handed to chairman Kaizer Motaung's son was the one Steenbok had set his sights on, given his qualifications.
But will his exit, confirmed last weekend by Chiefs, affect the recruitment policy now that a man who was so devoted to the art of scouting has departed?
Unlikely.
Ntseki has been brought to Naturena for the sole purpose of seeing to it that the club has a philosophy and playing style, and he will be overseeing the scouting of players from the youth academy right up to the senior team.
With Bobby Motaung now working closely with his brother Kaizer Jnr, there appears to be more than enough hands-on deck, especially if you add coach Stuart Baxter to the mix along with his technical lieutenants of Dillon Sheppard and Arthur Zwane.
The parting of ways between Chiefs and Steenbok was also accelerated by information the Siya crew received last week that he had approached the CCMA, suggesting there was a serious dispute between him and the club.
Although Amakhosi issued a statement that Steenbok had asked to be relieved of his duties, after almost three years since he returned for a second spell, to pursue a PhD degree at the University of Johannesburg, the Siya crew reported in this week's edition of Soccer Laduma that the exit was acrimonious!
The Siya crew did offer Steenbok a right of reply days before Chiefs announced he was leaving, but he gave us the run around.
