A huge improvement will be expected from Kaizer Chiefs in the new season following a disappointing 2023/24 campaign for the side, club legend Lucky Stylianou has mentioned, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.
Chiefs finished in a disappointing 10th place on the DStv Premiership log after losing 2-0 to relegated Cape Town Spurs in their last game of the season.
With Amakhosi having clocked a decade without winning a major trophy, missing out on competing in the Top Eight next season won't help the club in their quest to change the situation and to bring smiles to their multitudes of supporters.
Under Cavin Johnson, who has been the club's interim coach since taking over from Molefi Ntseki earlier in the season, the Soweto giants had their worst ever finish in the PSL era, with the former Al Ahly assistant coach having only achieved six wins from 21 league matches in the league.
The Good
"Look, the season has been disappointing, but I am very confident that the club and the board are working on it for the team to improve next season. I am expecting a lot of changes that will help the club to improve and return to where it belongs. From the current group, the players that are there know that they will need to come back firing on all cylinders otherwise they know that they will be out. I am confident of a better season," said Stylianou.
The Bad
"I am disappointed because we've underperformed, and I would like to use that word – underperformed. For a club like Kaizer Chiefs to finish 10th on the log is a disaster. A lot of people know that, and the club, coaches and the players know it. You can't play for a club like Chiefs and find yourself in such a position and expect no changes to happen at the end of it all. There's going to be changes to improve the situation," added the former midfielder.
The Ugly
"I'm predicting huge changes to come from Chiefs ahead of the new season. As expected, the changes will have to start with the coach, as a new coach is expected to join the club as a replacement for the current one (Johnson) and all the way to the players. A lot of mistakes have been made and I'm sure the board knows that and is working on it. Looking at the way we have been playing, I feel that some of the players are not Chiefs material and in saying so I am not pointing fingers at any one and I won't be mentioning any names. But it's a fact, some players in the team do not deserve to play for a club as big as Kaizer Chiefs. We all lack certain characteristics and that's what I am trying to explain about certain players and their ability to play for a big club like Chiefs," Stylianou concluded.
Who should Chiefs appoint as the club's new head coach?
