Chiefs Back In The Top 8 After Sinking SuperSport

Chiefs Back In The Top 8 After Sinking SuperSport

Kaizer Chiefs lead SuperSport United 1-0 at halftime of their DStv Premiership encounter on Saturday evening.

DStv Premiership

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 SuperSport United

Date: 27 April 2024

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Chiefs kept the same line-up after their narrow loss against Richards Bay, as Ashley Du Preez, Pule Mmodi, Christian Saile and Mduduzi Shabalala were in attack.

Amakhosi were up for the game from the first whistle as within the first minute Saile threatened with a strike that missed narrowly wide.

As the game opened up, Saile eventually opened the scoring for Chiefs on 19 minutes with a cracking shot after a rebound at the back post.

Matsatsantsa were fired up and on the half-hour mark Keenan Bezuidenhout had a chance to equalise with a strike at the near post that was saved by goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

Cavin Johnson's charges slowed down the tempo of the game after that, as the likes of Shabalala frustrated SuperSport with skills on the ball.

The game was on the edge towards the interval and the Glamour Boys thought they doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time after Given Msimango headed home a cross from close-range but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Gavin Hunt brought in some experience at half-time, as Terrence Dzvukamanja replaced Shandre Campbell and Lyle Lakay came on for Tendamudzimu Matodzi.

United had a perfect start in the second stanza after Dzvukamanja levelled matters five minutes later with a shot from the penalty spot after a handball in the box by Sifiso Hlanti.

The Glamour Boys picked themselves up as they pressurized Matsatsantsa and with 14 minutes remaining, Shabalala restored their lead with a volley from the edge of the box that touched the gloves of shot-stopper Washington Arubi and deflected to the bottom corner.

Johnson needed fresh legs in attack with eight minutes left, as Edson Castillo replaced goalscorer Shabalala. However, Chiefs stayed deep in their own half in the dying minutes as they looked to see out the result.

Matsatsantsa lacked momentum, as Amakhosi held on to a win that ended their five-game winless run and they jumped up to eighth on the log.
