Nwabali Breaks Silence On Reported Threats From South Africa

Nwabali Breaks Silence On Reported Threats From South Africa

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali who caught the attention of many scouts at the Africa Cup of Nations, has finally spoken up about returning to his South African club, Chippa United.

Nwabali discusses his future at the club after there were calls for him to not go back to South Africa because of alleged threats made against him, following how the Super Eagle made crucial stops to deny Bafana Bafana a place in the Afcon final.

Nigeria beat South Africa in the semi-final shootout, before losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday.

"I must go back to my club, but talking about threats, this is football," Nwabali said, according to BluePrint.

"You can threaten someone because they also warn some other teams too. How about if those they beat decided to keep threatening your players, would it make sense?" he added.

Chippa United boss Chippa Mpengesi also came under fire for publicly declaring his support for Nwabali and the Super Eagles team ahead of their game against Bafana. That might have raised eyebrows considering that one would expect a South African club to support Bafana.

However, the 27-year-old Nwabali admits he had contacted his club boss a few days ago who dismissed reports of any threats against him.

"It's football, I don't think there's anything attached to it. Maybe it was just someone writing on social media. It's cool to me because I spoke to my (Chippa United) chairman three days ago, but he didn't say anything like that stuff.

"So, he felt like, 'No, it's cool, you can come back. I must go back to my club because they owe me'," Nwabali highlighted.

Chippa are back in action on Saturday when they welcome second-placed Cape Town City in the return of Premiership fixtures, following the conclusion of Afcon this past weekend.
