Mammila Hails Doctor's Coaching Pedigree

Mammila Hails Doctor's Coaching Pedigree

Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has lifted the lid on Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo's coaching credentials after their time together at Baroka FC.

Mammila, who was re-hired at Chippa as a team manager last year, surprisingly took over the coaching reigns at the Gqeberha-based side after they parted ways with Diane Klate early on in the season in September.

The experienced football administrator-turn coach, who also had a spell at Baroka as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), has detailed how Khumalo initiated him into coaching during their time at the Limpopo side.

'16V', who had a long career at Chiefs as a player and as a coach that dates back to the 1980s, left the club and joined Bakgaga as a Technical Director ahead of the 2017/18 season.

Mammila, who hired Khumalo at Bakgaga, says the Amakhosi legend initiated him into coaching after they spent time closely together for a year and hailed his influence in his coaching career.

"That's the guy (Doctor Khumalo) who prepared me, when I was with him at Baroka, when he came, he came as a Technical Director, but I asked him to help Kgoloko (Thobejane) and take over the session," Mammila said in an interview on Marawa Sports World Wide.

"While Kgoloko was working on tactics, after each and every training session, we'll sit at home, because we were staying together for almost a year.

"Actually I was learning football from that gentleman (Doctor Khumalo) for a year, so we'll sit, he'll explain everything from the first session up until to the last," he said.

"And by the way, Doctor is qualified as an instructor by profession. He's allowed to teach coaching, so I was taught coaching by this gentleman for a period of a year."

Despite scant coaching experience in the professional ranks, Mammila has made history already at the Chilli Boys after becoming the first coach to win four consecutive league matches since they were promoted to the Premiership in 2012.

The former taxi owner and police officer, went on to attribute his success so far to Khumalo's teachings, who also he says was behind Baroka winning the Q-Innovation 1 in the 2017/18 season.

"And if you remember very well, that season, the first eight games, while he (Doctor Khumalo) was doing the training, Baroka won Q-1 Innovation," he said.

"And let's be honest, winning Q-1 means you were a better team than all the 16 teams (15 teams) for that eight matches.

"So it means the thing that Doctor was doing at Baroka for that first eight matches, helped us win that Q-1. So if you can help Baroka to be better, in those first eight games, than Sundowns, Pirates, Chiefs, Cape Town City, SuperSport, what more do you ask for?" he added.
