Not only is the new Carling Black Label Knockout a competition with a number of innovations, it is also backed by millions of Rands which could be won by both clubs and supporters. In light of this, we take a look at just how much is being pumped into the competition.
Following its' successful launch on Tuesday, the Carling Black Label Cup is the talk on everyone's lips.
Naturally, one of the bigger talking points has been the financial incentives that come with the competition, some of which have never been seen on the African continent.
Carling have put their money where their mouths are, quite literally so, and here's how:
Man of the Match:
As voted for by the fans, the Man of the Match will walk away with arguably the biggest MOTM cheque on the continent worth R100 000 at each match. Considering that all 16 teams will be participating, the opening eight matches will see R800 000 awarded to individual players! The quarter finals a further R400 000. There will be R200 000 in the semi-final and R100 000 in the final!
Fak' iGoal Uzobona:
The innovation is loosely translated to 'Score a Goal See' which is aimed at energising the game to produce earlier goals in matches. At the start of each match there will be 90 minutes and R90 000 on the clock, for each minute that passes R1 000 drops off with the potential prize money counting down to zero at the end of the match.
Prize Money:
While the prize money for the competition is yet to be confirmed, it remains to be seen just how much teams will walk away with for lifting the new cup. It's predecessor, the Telkom Knockout had a prize money of R4 250 000, so it remains to be seen whether Carling's new tournament will top that.
