Six games have come and gone for Cape Town Spurs and there is still not a single point for the team, which has led to concerns for those following the club.
Last night, Spurs lost 2-1 at home to Golden Arrows at the Athlone Stadium, a result which raised concerns about Shaun Bartlett's future as the coach of the side.
Having succeeded in guiding Spurs to promotion through the play-offs in June, Bartlett was rewarded with a new two-year contract by the Mother City outfit to lead the side in the DStv Premiership.
The team has been campaigning in the second tier for five years since their relegation from the topflight in the 2017/18 season when they were still known as Ajax Cape Town.
With the results not forthcoming as the team is sitting at the basement of the log, Spurs management could be left with no choice but to make changes in the technical team, according to well-placed sources.
Former midfielder Brent Carelse is one of those concerned, although he believes that the next match in the Cape Town derby against Cape Town City at the end of the month, could be a turning point for the Ikamva-based outfit.
The Good
"We as the people of the province and the supporters are still hopeful that things will change for the better and that the team will start getting the results and accumulate some points. It's a matter of checking whether they are doing things as a collective for them to make their own luck to get the results, and those kinds of things. I don't know if they have strengthened enough in key areas and that will be important to look at. The youngsters that are coming through and those that need to step up their game need to understand that they are now playing in a different level from where they were before. They must have been in the second tier for five years, but they now need to understand that they are in a different level. I am sure that they wouldn't want to see themselves back in the league they were playing in previously. It might still be early in the season, but they need to start picking points," said Carelse.
The Bad
"To be honest with you, things are not looking good for the team as they have now equaled the record of Bush Bucks for most number of defeats by a team in the early stages of a season. It's been unfortunate for them that they haven't been getting wins because I thought there has been a bit of continuation for the team from what they were doing last season in terms of how they play," he added.
The Ugly
"I think it will come down to the playing personnel and questions will be asked as to whether they are good enough or not. Are they doing what they are supposed to be doing? Those are the questions," he said.
"Give These Boys A Real Chance"
"The PSL (topflight) is so unpredictable. Okay, it looks predictable at the top with obviously one team (Mamelodi Sundowns) winning the league over and over again. But for the rest of the teams, it is predictable, I know it because I played there. Yes, when you are down there it might look bad and stuff, but I would like us to give these boys a real chance and see what they can do. I wish the team can give the players that played so much last season and in the play-offs a rest so that the other players can get a chance to play. Then, go and find two or three good players, I'm talking about top campaigners to add to the team, and see how it goes," concluded Carelse.
How many points can Spurs pick before January?
