Last week, Cape Town City boss John Comitis made a revelation that one of his star players at the club Khanyisa Mayo is worth over a staggering R36 million.
This is after the forward emerged as one of the sought-after players in Mzansi after scoring 12 goals in the league and finished as the joint top goal-scorer with Mamelodi Sundowns' leading striker Peter Shalulile.
Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have been interested in Mayo, which was confirmed by Comitis, while the chairman revealed that there has also been interest in the 24-year-old from overseas.
However, it was Comitis' $2 million evaluation of the Bafana Bafana player that created debate in the fraternity, with some agreeing with the club boss while others are disapproving of his estimation.
Prominent local football agent Ratshibvumo Mulovhedzi believes that there is no player in the DStv Premiership who is worth over R30 million at present.
The Good
"There is no player from the PSL (DStv Premiership) to another local club that is worth that much. Yes, for a player like that boy from Stellenbosch FC (Olwethu Makhanya) who made the move to the MLS it is understandable. Cassius Mailula is another one after his move from Sundowns to the MLS but not any of the local deals are worth that much," said Mulovhedzi.
The Bad
"We may have different evaluations on the these but there is no player in South Africa that is worth over R30 million. I am an agent and I have been involved in these kinds of deals and there is no player in South Africa that is worth that much from what I understand," he said.
The Ugly
"What's confusing people most of the time is that people look at the Transfermarkt value of the players and think that is the way to go but that is not always accurate. Another thing that needs to be looked at is that these players are not getting paid as much as club bosses evaluate them. There is no balance in how they are valued and how they are being paid, which is a big problem," concluded Mulovhedzi.
How much do you think Mayo is worth?
