CT City End Chippa's Winning Run With Comeback Win

Cape Town City ended Chippa United's four-game winning run after securing a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Result: Cape Town City 2-1 Chippa United

Date: 25 October 2022

Venue: DHL Stadium

Citizens coach Eric Tinkler handed a start to 18-year-old striker Luke Daniels, while there was also a re-call for Thabo Nodada in midfield after last week's defeat away to Richards Bay FC.

The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, were boosted by the return of defender Ronald Pfumbidzai who missed the win over Sekhukune United, as they looked to continue their impressive run.

The hosts looked lively in the early stages and went close to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute when Darwin Gonzalez rattled the frame of the goal from close range.

While City were unable to take advantage of their dominance, the visitors got the breakthrough on 30 minutes when Ronaldo Maarman fired past City goalkeeper Darren Keet.

The Citizens were unlucky not to go into the halftime break on level terms after Mduduzi Mdantsane saw his strike from distance crash against the upright.

The home side continued to enjoy most of the possession upon resumption in the second half, although they were unable to find a way past the Chippa defence. As a result, Tinkler responded by throwing on Khanyiso Mayo for Gonzalez with 30 minutes left on the clock.

The decision by Tinkler paid dividends in the 72nd minute as Mayo levelled matters for the home side with his fourth league goal of the season.

City completed the turnaround with six minutes left on the clock when captain Thamsanqa Mkhize fired home from the rebound after Mpho Makola's free-kick was kept out by the woodwork.

The Citizens were able to hold out until the final whistle to end their five-game winless run in all competitions.
