Head coach Eric Tinkler was not on the bench for the encounter as he does not have the necessary coaching license for CAF competitions, with assistant coach Diogo Peral taking charge on the day.
The Citizens made three changes from Tuesday's goalless draw against Sekhukhune United, with Craig Martin, Marc van Heerden and Thabo Nodada recalled to the side.
The home side carved out their first opening on eight minutes when Darwin Gonzalez went close with a curling effort from just outside the box.
City had the ball in the back of the net after 23 minutes when Khanyisa Mayo slotted home from close range after Martin's effort was saved, however the strike had been ruled out for an offside.

That proved to be the last bit of goal-mouth action in the first half, but that would change seven minutes into the second when Taahir Goedeman opened the scoring with his first goal of the club.
The lead was doubled in the 58th minute, with veteran full-back Marc Van Heerden nodding home his first goal for the Mother City outfit.
The home side opted to re-shuffle the pack for the final 20 minutes, as Goedeman made way for Mduduzi Mdantsane, while Mpho Makola and Wayde Lekay replaced Martin and Mayo.
While the Citizens were unable to add to the tally in the latter stages, they were able to keep the Congolese side at bay and hold for the clean sheet.
City will now travel to the Congo for the second leg next Sunday.
