When he left Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2017/18 season, things weren't looking too great for Keagan Buchanan, but now the midfielder's on the verge of a serious turnaround.
After a devastating injury blow early into his career at Maritzburg United following his move from Naturena, the 28-year-old is now finding his feet nicely in Pietermaritzburg and has already played more games for the Team of Choice than he did for the Glamour Boys.
Buchanan played a major role in knocking out his former employers in the semifinals of this year's Telkom Knockout, and to get his hands on the trophy this evening would be a cherry on top for a player who has not had an easy few years.
Having played more Absa Premiership minutes in 2019/20 than any of the last three seasons – and the last two combined – Buchanan says that his Maritzburg teammates are in good spirits ahead of the game against Mamelodi Sundowns, and is hoping for an exciting game.
Speaking to Maritzburg's social media team, the former Bloemfontein Celtic man said, "I'd say the mood in the camp is going very well… We're happy that we came from three points in Polokwane, it's obviously a massive boost for the boys going into this final week of preparation for the final. We're happy, we're excited, and looking forward to obviously a good game of football."
The midfielder also had a special word for the Maritzburg supporters that have supported them in a wild ride throughout 2019, saying, "My message to the 'Blue Army'? We love you guys, we wouldn't be here without you. We're hoping you're able to come and support, we'd like to see all the blue jerseys there on Saturday evening, and hopefully we can bring the cup home."
Buchanan is expected to start v Sundowns when matters get underway at Moses Mabhida at 18h00 tonight.
