Despite playing the full 90 minutes against AmaZulu FC this week, Jan Olde Riekerink reveals that their leading goalscorer, Kermit Erasmus is still not 'game fit.'
The 29-year-old was ruled out with injury for the month of December in 2019, although made a return for Cape Town City's 1-0 win against Baroka FC on January 05.
Despite starting and playing 84 minutes against Baroka and thereafter playing the full encounter against AmaZulu in midweek, the Dutch tactician has revealed that Erasmus is still not match fit.
The expectation on Erasmus to constantly find the back of the net, is now at an all-time high, with the Citizens struggling for wins to fight their way up the league table.
The striker has scored eight goals in all competitions for City so far this season, although his last goals for the team, came in a 5-3 win against Polokwane City in early November, where he netted a brace.
"Kermit didn't train for two months; he came back and then trained. Until so far, he is struggling but you also have to give him the benefit of the doubt because he has to be game fit, and he is not completely game fit," Riekerink told the media.
City will travel away to the FNB Stadium this weekend to take on Kaizer Chiefs and while the encounter calls for a different game plan from the Citizens, it remains to be seen whether Erasmus will be given a place in the starting line-up to try and finally find his old form.
