Mido Reborn: The Last Time I Did That Was At Chiefs

George Maluleka is back, leaner, fitter and more focused – but what has been the change? The midfielder has revealed the changes he has made to get back to the player he was whilst on the books of Kaizer Chiefs.

Not since the 2019/20 season has Maluleka managed to surpass the 15-game mark in the DStv Premiership.

However, at AmaZulu, the Tembisa-born star looks a man reborn and before the halfway mark of the DStv Premiership season, has amassed 16 appearances in all competitions for Usuthu and is yet to miss a game.

He made 19 appearances in two seasons for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Speaking to the media at the launch of the Philly's Games in Tembisa, Maluleka revealed how he had to get over his injury woes and work to lose the excess weight that has seen him undergo a massive transformation this season.

"I think a lot has happened. I worked a lot. I worked very hard, so mina [me] I'm a player that pushes myself. Obviously, I wasn't playing, I was like okay I need to push myself even further and with that happening, I ended up losing weight and becoming strong and fit. I was injury prone – I'm not anymore," he said.

"I played all 15 games for AmaZulu, when last did I do that in the last two or three years? The last time I did that is when I was at Chiefs but if I do that, then I get injured. I've been able to play 15 games"

Asked about what sparked the changes, the 33-year-old attributes investing in his body as the turning point for him.

"I've been taking care of my body, I've realized that investing in your body goes a long way and this is exactly what is happening, so I've invested. I became more consistent in how I do things and here we are."

"I always did it, its just there's more focus now because I am older. I'm 33, I need to make sure that I keep the screws intact because we all know especially with us in our country, when you reach that age, automatically you are finished, that's where you do all the hard work off the field," he added.
