UEFA Nations League Report: Spain v Portugal 02 June 2022

UEFA Nations League Report: Spain v Portugal 02 June 2022

Portugal and Spain could not be separated in their opening UEFA Nations League clash after playing to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.

Result: Spain 1-1 Portugal

Date: 02 June 2022

Venue: Estadio Benito Villamarín

Cristiano Ronaldo was only named on the bench for the 2016 European champions as Rafael Leo joined Andre Silva and Bernardo Silva in the attack, while Luis Enrique went for Alvaro Morata and Ferran Torres in Spain's front line.

The game got off to a lively start as Gavi went close with a half-volley from the edge of the box after just four minutes after some good work by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Portugal had to wait until the 18th minute for their first opening as Raphael Guerreiro did well to pick out Leao, who sent a first-time strike just over the crossbar.

However, the opening goal arrived just 10 minutes later when Pablo Sarabia sent a well-weighted cross to Morata, who calmly slotted home from close range after a swift counter attack.

The Portuguese pushed for an equaliser before the halftime whistle but they were unable to find a way past the Spanish defence, with Andre Silva going closest with a low strike.

Selecao coach Fernando Santos responded with a change at the start of the second half, as Joao Moutinho made way for his Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate Ruben Neves in midfield.

Spain shot-stopper Unai Simon was called into action just before the break after pulling off a fine superb save to keep out Leao's shot at his near post.

Ronaldo finally made his introduction on 63 minutes along with Goncalo Guedes, while La Roja coach Enrique threw on Koke and Dani Olmo a couple minutes later.

However, it was another substitute who made the desired impact for Portugal as Ricardo Horta brought his side level in the 82nd minute after turning home a cross from Joao Cancelo on his second appearance for Selecao.

Spain had a chance to win then game on 90 minutes when Sarabia's cross deflected into the path of Jordi Alba, who steered his header wide of the upright as the encounter ended all square.
