4 Biggest Talking Points Of The Weekend

Ronaldo scores… again!

The 39-year-old came off the bench in Portugal's UEFA Nations League clash with Scotland on Sunday night to score his 901st career goal. Ronaldo was named among the substitutes, but was brought on just after the break as A Selecao trailed 1-0. Strikes from Bruno Fernandes and the Al Nassr talisman secured a comeback victory for Roberto Martinez's side as the legendary forward's quest for a 10th century of goals began.

Lamine Yamal continues to shine

At just 17 years old, it could be argued that Lamine Yamal is already Spain's most important player. The 2024 Ballon d'Or candidate picked up yet another assist on the international stage in a 4-1 away win over Switzerland on Sunday, making it 11 in his last 12 appearances for his country. The Barcelona teenager has also started the club season in top form, having contributed to five goals in four matches for the Blaugrana in LALIGA.

New-look Germany stun Hungary

In what could be an exciting new chapter for Germany following the retirements of Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller, fans got a good glimpse of what the future may hold under head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Inspired by impressive performances from the likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, Die Mannschaft put five goals past Hungary in a mammoth 5-0 win on Saturday.

Rice and Grealish help England sink Ireland

Lee Carsley marked the start of his interim spell as England coach with a 2-0 win over Ireland, but his refusal to sing the national anthem caused a major stir in sections of the English press. Despite being born in England, Carsley represented Ireland 40 times as a player, though that wasn't to be the only talking point! Both goals scored by the Three Lions also came from ex-Ireland internationals in Declan Rice and Jack Grealish. Rice made three appearances for the Boys in Green before switching his allegiance, while Grealish was a regular youth international for Ireland before he availed himself for England in 2016.
