The Catalan giants got off to a perfect start as an error in judgment from Hugo Lloris allowed Jordi Alba to pick out Philippe Coutinho who composed himself well to guide the ball into the back of the net.

The visitors took control from then on, as Spurs struggled to make any forays forward as Harry Kane cut a frustrated figure upfront.

Barca doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Coutinho turned provider to pick out Ivan Rakitic, who rifled a superb volley past Lloris from the edge of the box.

Spurs did manage to carve out a couple chances as the half went on, but the LaLiga outfit did well to preserve their lead as they headed into the break.

Barca pushed for more goal as the second half resumed, with Messi rattling the upright twice in the opening five minutes.

However, the hosts pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute as Kane cut onto his right before bending the ball into the far corner from 12-yards out.

Spurs' joy was short-lived as Barca restored their two-goal advantage five minutes later, with Messi turning home Alba's cross with a neat finish.

The hosts were back in the game in the 65th minute, with Erik Lamela's shot from distance taking a deflection off Clement Lenglet and sailing past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Spurs threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, as the likes of Kane and Lamela went close to scoring late on in the half.

However, Messi sealed the win in the 89th minute as Luis Suarez's clever dummy left the Argentine one-on-one with Lloris, and he made no mistake from close range.
