UEFA Champions League
Result: Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 Manchester City
Date: 23 October 2018
Venue: Oblasny SportKomplex Metalist
Manchester City moved top of Group F with an impressive 3-0 win away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
City broke out quickly at the midway point and found Riyaad Mahrez on the end of the move but the Algerian missed from close range.
Solid defending then prevented Mahrez from finding the net after bringing down a high ball to strike a volley within seconds.
City were giving no space to the home side and bombarded every area of the pitch, eager to put daylight between them and their counterparts.
The opener came with an audacious first-time volley by David Silva on 29 minutes after poor defending from the Ukraine outfit.
A few minutes later it was two. Defender Aymeric Laporte was left unmarked in the box, and he did well to guid his header past the keeper to extend his side's lead.
City just picked up from the first half with consecutive blocked efforts from Silva and Mahrez approaching the half and hour mark.
Shakhtar were proving to be no match in every department and it was just a matter of time before City added to their tally.
Off the bench for a minute, Bernardo Silva ran into space to finish off well into the bottom corner on the back of a well-worked move to make it 3-0.
The Citizens have claimed back-to-back wins to move top of Group H, one point ahead of Olympique Lyon.
