UEFA Champions League
Result: Manchester United 0-1 Juventus
Date: 23 October 2018
Venue: Old Trafford
Cristiano Ronaldo made a winning return to Old Trafford, as Juventus registered a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Following United's 2-2 draw away to Chelsea over the weekend, Jose Mourinho named an unchanged line up, although Alexis Sanchez did not make the squad.
After a quiet start to the encounter, the visitors broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when Ronaldo's cross was deflected into the path of Paulo Dybala, who slotted past David de Gea.
De Gea was then called into action after 37 minutes, as the United shot-stopper produced two good saves to deny Ronaldo and Alex Sandro in quick succession.
The home side, meanwhile, looked disjointed going forward and never troubled Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny during the entire opening 45 minutes.
Ronaldo nearly doubled Juve's lead shortly after the halftime break with a venomous strike on the edge of the box, but De Gea produced a superb save to tip the effort over the bar.
From then on, Mourinho's team dominated the possession as they went in search of an equaliser, but they were constantly let down by their final ball.
United went agonisingly close to drawing level on 75 minutes as Paul Pogba rattled the upright with an impressive left-footed effort from around 25-yards out.
The remaining stages of the half saw United pushing for an equaliser , but the Juve defence held out as the visitors walked away with three points.
