Result: Liverpool 3-2 Paris Saint-Germain
Date: 18 September 2018
Venue: Anfield
Liverpool got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a thrilling start after defeating Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 at Anfield.
The opening 15 minutes of the encounter were an evenly contested affair, although both sides struggled to create opportunities in the respective final thirds.
The Reds broke the deadlock on 30 minutes as Andrew Robertson's cross from the left was headed home by an un-marked Daniel Sturridge.
Five minutes later, the Reds were awarded a penalty when Juan Bernat brought down Georginio Wijnaldum in the box. James Milner stepped up and converted the spot-kick to double the lead.
PSG got themselves back in the game five minutes before the halftime break as Angel Di Maria's cross found Thomas Meunier, who sent a fine volley into the bottom corner.
Liverpool thought they had bagged a third goal just before the hour mark when Mohamed Salah slotted home, but the Egyptian's goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper in the lead up to the goal.
PSG threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser but the likes of Neymar and Mbappe were struggling to carve out chances.
However, the Ligue 1 champions restored parity with seven minutes remaining as Mohamed Salah gifted the visitors possession which allowed Neymar to set up Mbappe, who rifled the ball into the bottom corner.
It was Liverpool who had the final say as substitute Roberto Firmino created space in the box before drilling the ball into the far corner to seal victory for the hosts.
