UEFA Champions League
Result: AEK Athens 0-2 Bayern Munich
Date: 23 October 2018
Venue: Athens Olympic Stadium
Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 victory over AEK Athens in Greece on Tuesday evening.
The Bavarians came into the clash looking for three points, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax Amsterdam in their last encounter.
Niko Kovac's men dominated in the opening exchanges, with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry going close to opening the scoring inside the first 20 minutes.
Manuel Neuer was called into action after 29 minutes, as the Bayern shot-stopper did well to keep out Petro Mantalos' looping header following a cross from Niklas Hult.
The Bavarians ended the half as the stronger side, although they were unable find the back of the net after Gnabry could only fire into the side-netting from close range, just minutes to the break.
After a quiet start to the half, the Bavarians broke the deadlock on the hour mark as Javi Martinez scored from close range after Robben's initial effort was blocked.
It was 2-0 three minutes later. The visitors moved the ball around quite neatly before Rafinha squared the ball for Lewandowski to slot home into an empty net.
With Bayern comfortably leading, Kovac withdrew Lewandowski for former Germany international Sandro Wagner for the closing stages of the match.
Leon Goretzka nearly rounded off the scoring in the 90th minute after being played in by Rafinha, but the German saw his close range effort palmed away by the goalkeeper.
In the end, 2-0 was how the score remained as Bayern secured a vital three points on the road.
