United hosted Valencia in their second Champions League match of the season on Tuesday, and in the build-up to the fixture, Scholes criticised the Portuguese tactician's recent antics and accused him of making a mockery of the club.
"I'm actually sat here surprised he (Mourinho) survived after Saturday, the performance was that bad," the Englishman told BT Sport.
"He's coming out in press conferences, he's constantly having a go at players, he's having a go at people above him because he's not getting what he wants, and I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he's embarrassing the club."
Following the 0-0 draw with Los Che, Mourinho was asked whether or not he had heard what Scholes said.
"I am not interested in that, I don't need to know what Paul Scholes said," he responded.
"He has freedom of speech just like anyone else, just like the fans who were chanting 'attack, attack' in the second half.
"People can say what they like, especially Manchester United supporters, because I respect their point of view."
