Bafana Bafana, who have won the hearts of many at the Africa Cup of Nations, also have an opportunity to maximize their earnings, which is of particular interest in South Africa due to the prize money negotiations before the tournament.
After progressing out of a difficult group that included Tunisia, Mali and Namibia, Bafana upset the continent's number one ranked team, Morocco 2-0 in the last 16 round on Tuesday night.
Bafana have to date secured R24.4 million in prize money, as the tournament received a 40 percent increase making the competition far more lucrative than all the other previous editions.
Progression to the semi-finals will give the 1996 kings R46.9 million if they get the better of the Cape Verde Islands in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
The winner of the tournament gains a whopping R131 million and the runner-up walks away with 4 million US dollars (R75 million).
Before the tournament, CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe had stated that the higher monetary incentives for the tournament is there to inspire the teams and all concerned to produce greater performances on all fronts.
On the other hand, the South African Football Association was not clear in terms how much of the prize money will be shared directly with the team. There are 10 Mamelodi Sundowns players in the Bafana squad who have recently also picked up massive bonuses due to winning the Africa Football League this season.
