Paul Pogba's brother is set to stand trial for trying to extort his 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning sibling out of millions of euros.

Mathias Pogba and five others will appear in court as part of an extortion case in which the former Manchester United man was targeted in 2022, according to ESPN.
Mathias, who is a footballer himself, was taken into custody in September 2022 after allegations of blackmail came to light, with the 34-year-old and his accomplices alleged to have tried to force Paul to part with €13 million (R256 million).
The group is accused of extortion and attempted extortion through the use of violence, abduction and confinement to facilitate a crime or misdemeanour, along with criminal conspiracy.
The prosecutor's office is charging the Guinea international and his fellow alleged extortionists "for the offenses of attempted extortion and criminal conspiracy".
The France international is understood to have paid the six men €100 000 (R1.9 million) at the time, but they wanted more as they claimed it was his obligation to support them after he became an international football superstar.
During the investigation, the French midfielder is believed to have told authorities that they tried to discredit him by claiming he asked a witch doctor to cast a spell on Kylian Mbappe, an allegation which Pogba has strenuously denied.
The court date is yet to be announced, but the ordeal is yet another negative situation the Juventus playmaker has had to face this year after receiving a four-year ban from football earlier in 2024.

That case is still ongoing, though, as he has appealed the verdict with the Court of Arbitration for Sports.
