In the latest transfer window, Manchester United decided to officially part ways with the forward.
Following his loan spell at Getafe during the 2023/24 season, the Englishman attracted a lot of interest from clubs all over Europe.
One of the teams that seemed determined to land his services was Serie A outfit Lazio.
It is understood that the side from the Italian capital submitted a bid and even had a deadline as to when they wanted to complete the mooted deal.
However, they were unable to successfully land the 23-year-old's services, with Olympique Marseille eventually securing Greenwood's signature.
It seems Lazio president Claudio Lotito harbours some resentment towards the player after failing to sign him, though.
In July, he claimed that the club was poised to sign a player who was "worth 10 times more" than the Bradford native, and now he has labelled him a mercenary.
"He is absolutely not a regret, someone who does not accept coming to Lazio cannot be a regret. He is happy at Marseille, he made a choice and that is fine. We do not accept mercenaries, we only want those who choose Lazio. We have had enough mercenaries," Lotito said, as per Goal.

Greenwood's decision to move to the Stade Velodrome looks to have worked out for him, though. He has scored five goals and assisted another one in his opening seven matches in Ligue 1, and also won Marseille's Player of the Month award for August.
