An international footballer has tragically passed away at just 22 years old following a car accident.
Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo has died after suffering injuries in a devastating car crash last month.
Angulo is the third victim to die as a result of the crash, which took place in the capital city of Quito on 7 October. Independiente Juniors player Roberto Cabezas Simisterra and Victor Charcopa Nazareno had also lost their lives in the incident last month.
The midfielder had been rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure inside his head. He also sustained a lung contusion that required a chest tube. Angulo had been a passenger in a vehicle that crashed into a metal structure on the Rumiñahui highway in Quito at around 4:30 am.
At the time of his passing, Angulo was playing for LDU Quito, the reigning champions of Ecuador. The young talent had joined the club in March on loan from FC Cincinnati.
LDU Quito have issued an emotional statement confirming his death and paying tribute to the 22-year-old.
"With deep pain and sadness, we regret to report the death of our beloved player Marco Angulo," the club said in their statement.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
"His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts."
Angulo had earned two caps for the Ecuadorian national team during his brief but promising career. He made his debut for La Tri in 2022 and made his final appearance in a 2-1 victory over Australia last year.
