England 'Pick' Ideal Southgate Replacement

England have reportedly decided their ideal replacement after Gareth Southgate decided to leave his post as national team head coach.

Before the 2024 UEFA European Championship kicked off, the Watford native admitted that it was likely he would leave his position as head coach of the Three Lions should they fail to win the tournament.

While they came close, reaching the competition's final, they were ultimately thwarted 2-1 by eventual winners Spain at the Olympiastadion Berlin this past Sunday.

Having failed to win yet another major international tournament, Southgate stayed true to his word, announcing that he will be leaving the position after eight years in charge on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Daily Mail, the man the English FA wants to succeed him is Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.

The same report claims that the Amersham native is aware of the interest and would be open to talking to the FA as he harbours ambitions of one day becoming England boss, but as things stand, he is more than comfortable continuing with the Magpies and is currently conducting pre-season training.

It is understood that Howe had an £8 million (R187 million) release clause inserted into his latest contract at St James' Park, but after failing to secure UEFA Champions League qualification last season, this has been lowered to £5 million (R117 million).

Newcastle are said to now be bracing themselves for an approach for their manager, which will likely come soon following the confirmation of Southgate's departure from the Three Lions helm.

While Howe is a strong candidate, especially as the FA are said to prefer a local manager, Sky Sports News have also reported that other names are being considered too.

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter is one, while England U21 boss Lee Carsley is another. From a foreign perspective, it is believed that Argentine tactician Mauricio Pochettino is also being considered.
