Real manager Zinedine Zidane has been actively pursuing Pogba during the transfer window, and was recently reported to have launched a massive €142 million (R2.2 billion) offer for his countryman.
There has been no progress since, however, and with time to conclude a deal running out, Los Blancos have now started to consider alternatives outside of Zidane's desired targets.
According to Marca, the Spanish giants have identified Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Donny van de Beek as their "Plan B" should the club fail to sign Pogba.

The Dutchman is reportedly available for about €60 million (R975 million) after a strong season with Ajax, and the Spanish club apparently sees him as a more viable investment than Pogba, who is four years his senior and would cost more than double.
The Spanish publication reported further that Real are also interested in Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen, although Zidane remains adamant that Pogba should be signed at any cost.
The Madrid club's board are reportedly unwilling to finance an improved deal for Pogba, and it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Frenchman will be the team's next "galactico".

Van de Beek scored 17 goals in 57 appearances for Ajax last season, playing an integral role in the club winning the domestic double and reaching the Uefa Champions League semi-finals.
