International Champions Cup
Result: Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
Date: 21 July 2019
Venue: NRG Stadium
Eden Hazard made his debut as Real Madrid began their International Champions Cup campaign with a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich.
Hazard was the only new signing to get a start while Ferland Medy, Luka Jovic, Takefusa Kubo and Rodrygo started on the bench along with Gareth Bale.
After relatively opening, it was Bayern who broke the deadlock on 15 minutes as Corentin Tolisso slotted home from close range after his initial effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Hazard began to grow in the game as the first half went on, but he had to wait until the 39th minute for a sight at goal with a curling effort that was tipped away by Manuel Neuer.
The closing stages of the first half proved to be a lively for both goalkeepers, although Karim Benzema should have levelled matters on the stroke of halftime after a horrendous miss.
Zinedine Zidane opted for an entirely new line-up which included new signings Mendy, Jovic, Rodrygo and Kubo while Bayenr threw on their new signing Benjamin Pavard.
However, it was the Bundesliga giants who doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark through Robert Lewandowski's smart turn and finish into the bottom corner. The third goal arrived two minutes late, with Serge Gnabry getting in on the act after getting picked out by Leon Goretzka.
Bayern did finish the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Sven Ulreich was shown a straight red after taking out Rodrygo, who was through on goal. From the resulting free-kick, Rodrygo smashed home into the top corner to bag a consolation for Los Blancos.
