Real tried to test PSG's resolve with multiple bids north of €100 million (R1.7 billion) for the 23-year-old but the French champions were not budging, even if they knew that there was a possibility that he could walk for free at the end of last season.
Les Parisiens' patience and willingness to risk losing such a valuable asset was not for nothing as after a season, filled with constant speculation, had concluded, Mbappe decided to sign a three-year extension with his hometown side.
While he has never denied his ambition to one day don the famous white of Los Merengues, he has now revealed why he decided to reject the opportunity to take his career to the Spanish capital.
"I'm not scared. I'm ready," the most expensive teenager ever told Sports Illustrated.
"I always talk about my ambition, what I want to do, and now it's time.
"In Paris, the book is fully white. What an opportunity! You have to think differently.
"Of course, it was easier to go to Madrid. But I have this ambition. I'm French. I'm a child of Paris, and to win in Paris, it's something really special—really special. It writes your name in the history of your country for life."
