Following his explosive interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan last week, Manchester United have reportedly decided they will only sue Cristiano Ronaldo on one condition.
Ronaldo Addresses 'Cold' Fernandes Greeting After Explosive Interview
The Red Devils are believed to be exploring ways to terminate the 37-year-old's contract in England after his recent bombshell interview, during which he pulled no punches as he slammed the club, his teammates and manager Erik ten Hag.
United are reportedly in the process of cancelling his deal at Old Trafford, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano having claimed the English giants do not want Ronaldo to return after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to ESPN, the club has also threatened the five-time Ballon d'Or winner with legal action, but would rather avoid letting things get to that point.
United, as per the report, would only take the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward to court if he fights against the termination of his deal, with the club said to be confident the No. 7 can be sued over gross misconduct.
It is suggested that the English giants will need to give Ronaldo two weeks' notice of their intention to tear up his contract, while it is still unknown what the player's stance on the matter will be.
Many believe the Portugal captain's intention was to get United to act as they have, particularly following the stunning accusations he levelled against Ten Hag, the club's board and owners, the Glazer family in the aforementioned interview.
Ronaldo held nothing back as he publicly scrutinised the first-team boss, insisting he has no respect for the Dutchman, while he also stated that the club's American owners do not care about on-field success.
Ronaldo 'Offers' Himself To Real Madrid
Earlier this week, the Portuguese defended the timing of his on-air conversation with TalkTV, before urging reporters to stop asking his international colleagues questions about him and his issues at United.
