Messi To Return To Barca? Club Chief Speaks On Fresh Links
Though he has shared mainly healthy relationships with his managers over the years, the Argentine reportedly did not always see eye to eye with Enrique during the coach's three-year spell at the Catalan giants.
Messi enjoyed remarkable success under Enrique, who claimed a 2014/15 treble following their UEFA Champions League final over Juventus, but remembers an incident that dates back to around seven years ago.
In a recent interview, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner suggested the Spaniard's decision to bench him for a game following the December break left him disillusioned but insisted that the matter was eventually resolved.
"I think we were playing in one of the first matches in January after the break, and Luis Enrique benched me," he said, according to Barca Universal.
"There was a conflict, yes, for a little while. It got resolved though, and we had a fantastic relationship from then on."
Messi went as far as to say that he and his teammates attempted to stop Enrique from stepping down as manager in 2017.
"One day Luis Enrique decided to leave," he said.
"We had a special relationship with him, and we tried to convince him to stay until the very end. We told him that we were still doing well."
