Argentina Boss Reveals He Spoke To Messi Amid 'Tension' Claim

Argentina Boss Reveals He Spoke To Messi Amid 'Tension' Claim

Argentina's manager has admitted he has discussed his future with Lionel Messi amid rumours he was left annoyed with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner following his recent actions in Brazil.

It was reported earlier this week that Lionel Scaloni, 45, was frustrated that his captain led his teammates off the field prior to kick-off in the Albiceleste's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Brazil last month.

Amid clashes between Argentinians and Brazilian supporters at the Maracana Stadium, the 36-year-old and his teammates marched down the tunnel following a discussion with match officials and only returned to the pitch after the situation had de-escalated.

The Athletic reported that Scaloni and his coaching staff were "agitated" that Messi had not consulted them, and that his actions might have contributed to the comments the manager made in his post-match press conference.

The coach, in what was a surprising revelation, admitted he was considering his future, and has once again stated the same, only this time he has said he has spoken about the issue with Messi.

"I'm still thinking about my decision. I am calmly thinking, how everything goes, whether to restart or what," he said, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

"The players need a coach with all the desire and energy, at their level.

"I spoke to both Messi and Claudio Tapia (Argentina Football Association president), I just need to think about it."

There is a feeling, at the moment, that Scaloni will bow out after the 2024 Copa America, although he is under contract until 2026, according to Transfermarkt
