Manchester United have been criticised by a former Arsenal star for splashing £40million on Netherlands international Donny van de Beek this week.
The Red Devils announced the signing of Van de Beek earlier this week after agreeing a deal with Ajax Amsterdam, becoming the club's first signing ahead of the new season.
While the Red Devils are getting a highly-rated 22-year-old midfielder former Gunners striker Paul Merson does not feel they need him.
"Donny van de Beek looks like a panic buy at Manchester United," Merson told The Daily Star.
"I don't get it. They just spent £40m on a position where they are already strong and how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes?
"You have to have someone who can play the holding role.
"That signing looked to me like: 'Oh we haven't bought anyone yet, let's go and buy someone, who can we get?'"
