Mainoo has two years remaining on his current deal with the Red Devils but the two parties are negotiations over a potential new deal.
According to the Guardian, the England international plans to reject a new contract from the Manchester outfit and seek a move abroad.
Mainoo was heavily linked with a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea in the January transfer window.
The report claims that the 19-year-old is currently around £20,000 a week, but the player's representatives are aiming to improve the wage to reflect his role in the team.
Should the player not sign a new deal, United will reportedly look to offload the young midfielder as they need to sell players before they can bringing in new faces next season.
United coach Ruben Amorim liked what he saw from Mainoo in the number ten role before his injury last month.
"He was struggling a lot defending, as a midfielder – now more as a No 10 you can feel he's playing on the ball nearer the box and near the box is really good with his small connections," Amorim said in late January, as per the Guardian.
"We need time to work with players on what is their best position."
