The hosts almost surprised the visitors in the first few minutes of the clash as they came within inches of scoring. A deft one-touch move saw Edinson Cavani connect with Maxwell's low cross, but his volley smashed into the woodwork. A mistake from Congre almost cost Montpellier as his attempted clearance fell for Cavani, but the defender recovered quickly to make a vital interception. The Montpellier goalkeeper kept his side level with a fantastic save in the 30th minute. Angel di Maria sent a free kick towards the top corner of his goal but Pionnier made the crucial save. Pionnier was the visitors' hero again when he stopped Cavani just after the break. The goalkeeper had to spread himself to make the block after the striker was put through on goal. The away side had a good chance in the 69th minute. A cross towards the far post came to Berigaud but his attempted pass back across the area was completely missed.
