LaLiga Match Report: Real Madrid v Sevilla 09 May 2021

Real Madrid missed the chance to move top of LaLiga table after they played to a 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Sunday evening.

Result: Real Madrid 2-2 Sevilla

Date: 09 May 2021

Venue: Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano

Madrid made three changes from the defeat to Chelsea, as Marcelo and Alvaro Odriozola were both recalled alongside Federico Valverde while Joan Jordan started ahead of Youssef En-Nesyri for Sevilla.

Karim Benzema thought he had given Los Blancos a perfect start in the 13th minute with a brilliant header at the back post, but the goal was chalked off for offside in the build-up by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Fernando eventually broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 22nd minute with a strike from close range inside the box after a well cushioned header by Ivan Rakitic from a corner.

Zinedine Zidane's charges were pressurising Sevilla desperate for the equaliser in the closing phase of the first stanza but they could not make Bounou sweat in goal and Julen Lopetegui's men went to the break leading by an odd goal.

The visitors had a bright start in the second stanza but they could not take their early chances and Zidane made a double change in the 66th minute as Marco Asensio came on for Luka Modric while Miguel Gutierrez replaced Marcelo at left back.

Asensio had an immediate impact for Los Blancos as he snatched the equaiser with a strike inside the box after a through ball by Toni Kroos.

After Madrid were denied a penalty by the VAR in the last 14 minutes, Sevilla were a spot-kick moments later after the VAR review spotted Eder Militao's handball, which allowed former Barcelona star Rakitic to slot past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Los Blancos snatched the equaliser for Madrid deep in stoppage time with Toni Kroos' shot taking a slight deflection off Diego Carlos before sailing into the back of the net, Real move second on the log, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid while Sevilla remain in fourth place.
