A former Real Madrid player has been sentenced after being found guilty of sharing pictures of child pornography.
It was confirmed on Thursday that ex-Los Blancos and Germany defender Christoph Metzelder has been handed a 10-month suspended prison sentence.
The former footballer is believed to have been found guilty of sharing images of child pornography with acquaintances on WhatsApp after an investigation was launched in 2019.
According to AS, Metzelder told the court in Dusseldorf: "I sent these pictures even though I know what unspeakable suffering towards kids in each of these files there is.
"I leave a wound that will never heal. I have to live with that for the rest of my life.
"I accept the sentence."
Metzelder, who also represented Schalke and Borussia Dortmund during his playing career, made 47 senior appearances for the Germany national team.
